Prodrooms and Splice Studio
Cloud backup and version history for DAW projects, shared with collaborators. Splice shut it down in 2023.
What Splice Studio is for
Splice Studio synced a DAW project to the cloud each time you saved it, and kept the earlier saves so you could open an older version. You added collaborators to a project, and each of them worked on it on their own time, in their own copy of the same DAW. When DAWs or plugins did not match, Splice's own advice was to share bounced stems instead. Splice began closing Studio on March 9, 2023, and removed it on June 5, 2023, when projects stopped syncing and were no longer available.
The shape of the two
| Splice Studio | Prodrooms | |
|---|---|---|
| What is shared | The project, synced to the cloud each time it was saved. | The DAW window, live. The project stays on the host's computer; guests get a link, not files. |
| When people work | Each on their own time, in their own copy of the DAW. | Together, at the same moment, in the host's DAW. One driver at a time, and the host takes the controls back with one key. |
| What is kept | Every save, with earlier versions to open again. | A session page: who was in the room, which DAW, for how long, and a split sheet the people there can draft. A record, not a contract. |
| The other end installs | The Splice desktop app and the same DAW, with the same plugins or bounced stems. | Nothing. Guests join in a browser. |
| Where people find each other | Projects were private by default; you added the people you already worked with. | A board of live rooms, schedules, crews and profiles; the room is on prodrooms.com. |
| Built for | Backing up a project and passing it between producers. | Sessions where people reach in: feedback rooms, open mics, lessons, beat battles. |
Prices, limits and features on the other side change without telling us; check them on that product's own site. Nothing here is a score.
Where Prodrooms fits. Prodrooms fits when the people should work on the project together, at the same moment, in the host's DAW, with nothing for guests to install and no files to send.
Where Splice Studio fits. Splice Studio fit producers who owned the same DAW and passed a project back and forth, with every save kept. It is shut down: Splice removed it on June 5, 2023.
